IGL (In-Game Leader)

The IGL, or in-game leader, is a team's shotcaller — the player who makes the tactical decisions (where to land, when to rotate, push or fall back) during a match.

IGL — definition

The IGL (in-game leader) is a team's shotcaller — the player who makes the in-match tactical calls so teammates can focus on execution. The role is most associated with battle royale and tactical shooters, but the shotcalling function exists across team esports.

What an IGL decides

  • Landing spot — where the squad drops at the start of a match.
  • Rotations — when and where to move ahead of the shrinking safe zone.
  • Engagements — when to push a fight, hold position, or disengage.

In Garena Free Fire, PUBG Mobile and other squad battle royales, a strong IGL is often the difference between an early exit and a deep run, because positioning and timing usually matter more than raw aim. In tactical shooters like VALORANT the IGL calls site executes and mid-round adjustments — Malaysia's d4v41 is the in-game leader of Paper Rex.
