KBS is Malaysia's Ministry of Youth and Sports — the government body behind national esports policy and funding, including the DEK grant and the MEAP accelerator.
What is KBS?
Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) — the Ministry of Youth and Sports — is the Malaysian government ministry responsible for youth development and sport, including esports. Its current minister is Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, appointed in the December 2025 cabinet reshuffle.
KBS and esports
Malaysia formally recognised esports as a sport in 2023 (via an amendment to the Sports Development Act 1997), and KBS has since led the government's esports agenda. It delivers funding through its implementing agency Esports Integrated (ESI), principally via two 2026 programmes:
- Dana E-Sukan KBS (DEK) — grants for community tournaments and digital content.
- Malaysia E-sports Accelerator Program (MEAP) — support for athletes and teams competing internationally.
Together these were allocated RM1.5 million for 2026.
